How does climate communication work – and how can it be improved?

Prof. Dr. Markus Huff, head of the Perception and Action lab at the IWM, addressed this question at the UN Climate Conference COP30, which took place from November 10 to 21 in Belém, Brazil.

As part of an official side event in the Blue Zone – the United Nations' central conference area – Huff presented findings from psychological research on climate communication.

“We still know too little about what makes climate communication effective,” says Huff. “Psychological research can help us understand how people actually process information about climate change.”

The side event, titled “Between Art, Indigenous Knowledge, and Science – New Paths for Global Climate Protection,” was organized by the Leibniz Lab ‘Systemic Sustainability’, in cooperation with the Healthy Earth – Healthy People Foundation, the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, and the youth initiative Climate Live. The IWM is one of eight Leibniz Institutes contributing to the lab’s efforts to develop solutions for the sustainable transformation of society, the environment, and the economy.
