The Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM) conducts research on knowledge acquisition, knowledge exchange, and collaboration using digital media. The institute is a member of the Leibniz Association and is committed to international standards of scientific excellence.


We are looking for a dedicated individual to join the Everyday Media Lab starting on July 1, 2026.

Student Assistant (m/f/d)

Social Media Analysis | 20 hours/month


The Everyday Media Lab investigates the influence of digital media on knowledge processes in everyday life. The focus is on informal learning via social media and the processing of information in feeds. Another key area of focus is human-machine communication. Current research is focused on the computer-assisted analysis of short videos and communication patterns.


What to expect:

  • Assistance with the collection of social media data (particularly from TikTok via API or web scraping)
  • Assistance with data cleaning, preprocessing, and management, as well as the processing and analysis of large and/or unstructured datasets
  • Computer-assisted analysis of social media content (e.g., text and multimodal data)
  • Statistical analysis and visualization of research data
  • Assistance with the design and implementation of studies (e.g., computer-assisted analyses, online surveys, and experiments)
  • Literature reviews and general research activities

What you need to bring:

  • Degree in Computational Social Science, Data Science, Computer Science, Media Informatics, Cognitive Science, Communication Studies, Psychology, or a related field
  • Strong interest in social media and digital communication research
  • Experience with Python and/or R for data analysis
  • Basic knowledge of or strong interest in Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer-assisted text analysis, and/or computer vision is desirable
  • Basic knowledge of working with APIs or web scraping is an advantage
  • Experience working with large or unstructured datasets is a plus
  • Very good English skills; German skills are an advantage
