4th AI Symposium at the IWM

14 Jul 2026

Progress and implications of AI in the education sector

On 10 July 2026, the fourth AI Symposium took place at the Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM), organised jointly with the Centre for School Quality and Teacher Training, the Tübingen Regional Council, AI Makerspace and the Tübingen Centre for Digital Education (TüCeDE). Around 100 participants came together to discuss developments in the field of education.

The event kicked off with two highly topical keynote speeches: Dr. Isabel Brandhorst, head of the Internet Use Disorders Research Group at Tübingen University Hospital’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, spoke about the significance of ‘AI as a relational partner’ for mental health. Under the title ‘The Learning Effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence’, Dr. Tim Fütterer from the Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research explained how AI is being used in the education sector and what long-term consequences for learning can be expected.

Space for exchange and new ideas

At the midday ‘Markt der Möglichkeiten’, participants were able to find out about innovations, share their own experiences and make new contacts. The IWM contributed to the symposium with its own programme items and presented current research and knowledge transfer projects, including the Resonance Room for AIS.

To round off the event, a Barcamp provided a space to raise one’s own questions and discuss the implications of artificial intelligence for education together. The range of topics covered in the workshops extended from tutorial systems and gamification to ethical issues and the quality of educational tools.
